Center's Description
Southern Dharma Retreat Center is a nonprofit educational facility, welcoming a variety of spiritual paths, whose purpose is to offer meditation retreats. Our goal is to provide a comfortable gathering place, removed from the everyday distractions of life, and to create an atmosphere of quiet reflection where one can nurture a sense of peace and uncover the truths within the heart. Our retreats are led by qualified teachers from many paths, all of whom use silent sitting meditation as a central practice for looking within. We offer a supportive retreat environment and attempt to keep costs to participants affordable. Southern Dharma is located in a remote mountainous area of Western North Carolina, an hour northwest of Asheville. Facilities include a meditation hall, dormitory, a private forest hermitage and creekside campsites.

Once you find Southern Dharma, there is no need to go anywhere else. The small retreats allow for an intimate experience and time for interviews with the teacher. The rustic mountain setting is quiet, restful and relaxing. Southern Dharma has become my spiritual home.

Southern Dharma is a gem. Nestled on the side of a mountain in the Appalachians, with a stream running through the grounds, the center is an oasis of calm and quiet in our turbulent world. The teachers are first rate, the staff attentive, the food fabulous. The meditation hall is beautiful and serene, the only sounds the birds and frogs. The sleeping accomodations are very simple, but adequate. Rooms sleep 2-3, and a dorm sleeps about 12 (which can become a cacophony of snoring--ear plugs available). There is sometimes a wait for a bathroom. Camping by the stream is lovely.

Because the retreats are limited to 25, the meditator is assured adequate contact with the teacher(s).

I have been meditating at Southern Dharma for more than a decade, and always wish I could be there longer.
