Independent Meditation Center Guide

"Meditation teaches you how to loosen your monkey-grip on your experience and create a kind of inner spaciousness and relaxation by letting go of control and allowing things to be the way they are."

Center's Description
The Henry David Thoreau Sangha (“Hank”) meets every Monday night in Newton at St. John's Episcopal Church. Meetings always include Zen meditation (zazen) and Zen liturgy. Sometimes there will also be dharma talks (lectures/discussions), opportunities for individual meetings with a teacher (dokusan) as well as other special events. Check the calendar. You are invited to attend all or any portion of the activities—whatever works for your schedule and inclination. We sit 25-minute periods, and do a few minutes of walking meditation (kinhin) between periods. The evening starts formally at 7:30 pm and usually winds up between 9:00 and 9:30, though you are free to leave at any time.

If you are new to Zen:
Please send an email and then just show up around 7:00 for our regular program. If you arrive late, please just come in anyhow and take a seat and dive in.
