| Wat Dhammaram has been serving the Chicagoland area as a backbone of the Buddhist way of life and a Thai-American cultural center since 1976 and at its present location since 1983. The temple is surrounded by a beautifully maintained lawn and flower gardens in the front and wide spread, abundant vegetable gardens in the back. The Temple is residence to a group of Buddhist Monks from Thailand.The monks lead the members of the Temple in various ceremonies, teach meditation and act as spiritual counselors. There is also an extensive Sunday School program where children learn from an early age the precepts of Buddhism. Student's ages range from 5 years of age through high school. There are also special social and cultural activities for young adults. There are classes given in Thai language and etiquette, traditional Thai musical instruments and traditional Thai dancing. There are also classes in the unique sport of Thai kick-boxing. A very active Summer School program to cover a wide variety of interests is supervised by a group of teachers from Thailand every year. Though these activities are designed to assist the Thai-American community in preserving our traditional cultural heritage, many non-Asian Americans have found us as a place to learn and practice mediation, as we call "Vipassana". |
