| Mountain Stream Meditation has helped give Buddhist meditation a home in this region of the Sierra Nevada for twenty-seven years. The kind of meditation practiced is called Vipassana or "Insight" meditation, one of the classic meditation practices in the Buddhist tradition.
Mountain Stream Meditation serves a wide community by offering a variety of meditation retreats. Some are called "daylongs", of one or two days, others are residential or non-residential retreats where Insight meditation is taught and practiced. Our newsletter, Dharma Stream, is distributed to over 3,000 people. Both the newlsetter and our website list the dates and times of the many retreats offered throughout California. These retreats are lead by Mountain Stream Meditation's resident teachers, John M. Travis and Heather Sundberg and by visiting teachers from other areas. Insight meditation classes welcome all levels of practice, from beginner to advanced, and are usually held twice a year. Regular groups, the "sitting groups" meet for a few hours on a weekly basis. These groups are listed in our newsletter and on the website. Other community activities, such as potlucks, community workdays, board and committee meetings, and gatherings with other Buddhist meditation leaders and groups are also part of our programs. The resident teachers, senior students and volunteers help plan our many events for this active community. Along with local churches, Mountains Stream Meditation continues to help feed the homeless in Nevada County through local programs. |
