| Springwater Center is located in western New York State on over 200 acres of beautiful country land with open fields and woods, soft rolling hills, hardwood and evergreen forests, ponds, meadows, and a stream cascading through a hemlock-shaded ravine.
The house sits on a quiet hillside above Springwater valley and the surrounding hills. A spacious, naturally-lighted sitting room with large windows overlooks fields and woods. The house includes simple accommodations for staff and guests, and a small cabin in the woods is also available. All meals are vegetarian. The Center came into being in 1981 as the Genesee Valley Zen Center, when Toni Packer and a group of friends left the Rochester Zen Center. Toni had been a student of Roshi Philip Kapleau there and became a teacher before leaving. As a teacher, Toni's concern with the problems of tradition and authority led her to question her affiliation with formal Buddhist Zen. "Don't all present and past influences have to stop interfering in order to attend fully, immediately, now?" The new center was founded out of this need to see through the raw material of our everyday lives rather than grapple with traditional koans and practices. The Center acquired the Springwater property, built a facility, and since 1985 has held retreats with no rituals or ceremonies of any kind and has been available for guests and rentals. In 1986 it changed its name to Springwater Center. |
