Center's Description
The Québec Vipassana Centre, also called in Pali, Dhamma Suttama, meaning "the best of Dhamma", is one of the 118 International Vipassana meditation centres devoted to the teaching and practice of Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka. It is located halfway between Montréal and Ottawa/Gatineau, five kilometers north of Montebello.

On this exceptional property, in a tranquil, open valley surrounded by forest, the centre can accommodate more than 100 students per course. Purchased in February 2011, this new centre at Montebello continues to uphold the mission of the former Sutton centre established in 1999.

Set in the gentle rolling hills of Quebec's Eastern Townships, 3kms from the Vermont border, perched on the side of a mountain, overlooking the valley, cows and farms below, facing mount Pinacle and its spectacular sunsets, this centre is really condusive to deep introspection. But the external surroundings are only the outer shell of the meditative experience, as Vipassana plunges you to the depth of the mind-matter phenomenon inside. Some call Vipassana "Boot-Camp Meditation". Well, with 10 hours of sitting practice a day, I can assure anyone going for a retreat that it will certainly be one of the most difficult experiences of their lives, but also the most rewarding. And the transformations are lasting, especially if you keep up your practice and try to integrate it in every day life (which is the real challenge) The beauty of this practice is its universal, non-sectarian approach, as well as the fact that it is offered on a donation basis, thus eliminating any class discrimination. So you will find people of all ages and walks of life attending these retreats, alone, together, in silence. It's inspiring, GO SEE FOR YOURSELF.
